He Wept: The God Who Enters Our Pain

Scripture: “Jesus wept.” — John 11:35

There are moments in life when words seem empty. A diagnosis changes everything. A loved one is gone. A prayer feels unanswered. In those moments, many people quietly ask, “God, where are You?”

The story of Lazarus gives us an unexpected answer.

Jesus already knew He was about to raise Lazarus from the dead. He knew the miracle was only moments away. Yet when He saw Mary and Martha grieving, He did not rebuke their tears or rush past their sorrow. He stood beside them, and He wept.

Those two words reveal the heart of God. He is not distant from our suffering. He is not cold or indifferent. He is the God who enters our pain.

The cross proves this even more powerfully. Jesus did not watch humanity suffer from heaven while offering advice from a distance. He took on flesh, walked among us, was rejected, betrayed, beaten, and crucified. He carried our griefs and bore our sorrows. He experienced loneliness, loss, and physical agony so that we would never have to face our deepest suffering alone.

This does not mean every question is answered or every pain immediately disappears. Suffering is still real. Tears are still real. But God’s presence is just as real.

If your heart is heavy today, remember that Jesus is not standing on the sidelines of your life. He is beside you. He understands every tear, every disappointment, every sleepless night, and every silent prayer. The same Savior who wept at a tomb also walked out of His own tomb in victory. Because He lives, grief does not have the final word. Hope does.

Whatever burden you are carrying today, bring it to Him. He is not offended by your questions or intimidated by your pain. He invites you to cast your cares upon Him because He cares for you.

Prayer

Father, thank You for being near to the brokenhearted. Thank You that You are not distant from my pain but present in the middle of it. Help me trust You when I cannot understand my circumstances. Remind me that Jesus knows my sorrow, carries my burdens, and gives me hope that reaches beyond this moment. Fill my heart with Your peace and strengthen my faith to keep walking with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection: What burden have you been trying to carry alone that you need to place in the hands of the Savior who weeps with you and walks beside you?
